Celebrate Christmas with us at SJR

Advent Service - 29th November

On Advent Sunday evening 29th November at 6.30 pm, our church choir led a special service to mark the beginning of the Advent and Christmas Season. The service will began in a darkened church with a candle lit procession by the choir, gradually increasing the amount of light in the church as we sang the hymn, to signify the light of our Lord's coming from the darkness of a confused world.

Our normal choir of 21 members was supplemented with a few friends from Southampton Choral Society making a choir of 30 voices. We sang some of the great hymns of  Advent, including ' O come, O come Emmanuel', 'Come, thou long expected Jesus', 'Hark the glad sound', and other great Advent favourites. The choir also sang 6 Advent/Christmas arrangements by various composers, including Andrew Carter, Phillip Ledger and John Rutter.

The items by the choir were interspersed with readings, telling of the Old Testament prophecies of the coming of our Lord, and from the New Testament telling of the promise to Mary and John's great proclamation of the coming of Gods Kingdom. The service was a joyful celebration to begin our Christmas season at St. James Road.

Carols by Candlelight

This is a very special service, lit entirely by candles. We remember the nativity through Bible readings and in the singing of traditional carols.

Other Christmas Services

These include a midnight service and afternoon "Christingle Service" on Christmas Eve and a family-friendly service on Christmas day.
